Ontario puts $1.7M into Piramal Pharma's Aurora plant; company adds a reported $5.3M

The Ontario government is investing $1.7 million in Piramal Pharma Solutions' facility in Aurora, Ont. With that support, Piramal is also reportedly investing $5,314,000 to upgrade site infrastructure and strengthen its production capabilities.

Ontario is matching private money on existing-site upgrades, not just new plants — a brownfield modernization plan is fundable.

Canada manufacturing PMI drops to 51.5 as cost inflation hits highest since July 2022

The S&P Global Canada Manufacturing PMI fell to 51.5. Cost inflation rose to its highest level since July 2022, and confidence in the industry outlook wavered.

Ottawa introduces a Productivity Mega Deduction for equipment and technology investment

The federal government introduced the Productivity Mega Deduction, presented by FedDev Ontario minister Evan Solomon as helping Canadian businesses of all sizes invest in new equipment, adopt new technology and expand. The release excerpt gives no rates or eligibility.

If equipment or automation capex is planned, ask your accountant how the deduction changes its after-tax cost before setting timing.

The federal government is giving Mitacs $162 million to fund 10,000 paid placements for students and recent graduates in AI-related fields at smaller Canadian businesses, delivering on the AI for All priority of Canada's National AI Strategy.

A subsidized AI placement is a low-risk way to staff a first data or AI project — apply before the 10,000 spots are taken.

Stelco to lay off up to 500, consolidating production at Nanticoke over U.S. tariffs

Stelco will lay off up to 500 workers in an indefinite idle, concentrating production at its Lake Erie facility in Nanticoke, Ont., and citing U.S. tariffs. It said federal measures have cut imports, but volumes remain too high to bridge the gap trade tensions created.

If Stelco supplies you or buys from you, confirm what the consolidation means for lead times and volumes before Q4 orders lock in.

Ontario's $1B POFP offers tariff-hit firms loans for payroll, leases and utilities

Ontario has expanded protections for businesses: the $1 billion POFP provides immediate relief to Ontario businesses hit by tariffs and trade disruptions, through loans that can cover costs such as payroll, lease payments and utilities.

This is working-capital relief, not a capex grant — if tariffs are squeezing cash flow, check eligibility before cutting payroll.
