VW's PowerCo delays St. Thomas EV battery plant production to 2029

PowerCo Canada, Volkswagen's subsidiary, is delaying production at its $7-billion battery factory in St. Thomas, Ont., until 2029, to align the project's timeline and product strategy with evolving market demand.

Suppliers who tooled up for PowerCo's original timeline should revisit volume assumptions and cash plans now.

Funding & Grants

Ontario puts more than $3.4M into northern manufacturing jobs through NOHFC

The Ontario government is investing more than $3.4 million in manufacturing jobs in the north through the NOHFC, prioritizing projects that protect northern industries and jobs and mitigate the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions.

Tariff mitigation is an explicit NOHFC priority. Northern manufacturers hit by U.S. tariffs should frame applications that way.

Funding & Grants

Ontario commits $11M to Generation Mining's copper-palladium processing in Marathon

Ontario is investing $11 million through its Critical Minerals Processing Fund (CMPF) to support construction of Generation Mining's copper and palladium processing complex in Marathon.

CMPF money is funding domestic processing, not just mining. Relevant if you supply equipment, fabrication or services into northern projects.

Automation & Technology Adoption

Siemens to build digital twin for Rock Tech's Red Rock lithium converter

Rock Tech Lithium signed agreements with Siemens Canada to develop a digital twin and provide engineering expertise for its planned Red Rock Lithium Converter in northwestern Ontario, the first implementation phase of an earlier strategic MOU.

New Ontario process plants are being specified digital-first. Suppliers bidding into them should expect twin-ready data requirements.

Supply Chain & Reshoring

Workforce & Skills

CME: Ontario manufacturers short of key trades as apprenticeships lag

Findings published by Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters say Ontario manufacturers face shortages in key skilled trades, as apprenticeship pathways are not keeping pace with modern manufacturing.

The trades pipeline won't close the gap on your timeline. Build in-house apprenticeships and cross-training into next year's capacity plan.

Policy, Trade & Economy

CAE wins $300M U.S. Air Force contract despite Trump's Canadian procurement ban

CAE announced a $300-million contract with the U.S. Air Force, despite a Sept. 16 decree from President Trump that bans the U.S. federal government from procuring Canadian items.

The ban is not airtight in practice, but treat U.S. federal work as exposed. Check whether your products flow into U.S. government supply chains.
