Funding & Grants

Enhanced RTRI opens to southern Ontario applicants

FedDev Ontario has opened applications for the enhanced Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The expanded program is intended to help southern Ontario businesses and organizations manage immediate pressures, adapt to trade disruptions and build resilience.

If tariffs have hit your order book, this is the closest thing to regional working-capital relief on offer.

Policy, Trade & Economy

Carney warns of tough times as retaliatory tariffs take effect

Prime Minister Mark Carney used a national address to warn of tough times ahead as Canada's retaliatory tariffs came into force. The duties range from 15 to 50 per cent and target only products that were on the US list, matching the dollar value of those exports at $27.8 billion.

Mirrored tariff lists mean your input costs track the US schedule. Watch both lists, not just Ottawa's.

Supply Chain & Reshoring

Analyst: a US ban on Bombardier would hit American aerospace hardest

An analyst quoted by Canadian Manufacturing argues a US ban on Bombardier sales could massively disrupt American aerospace. Bombardier says its supply chain draws on some 2,800 American companies across 47 states, with each of its planes featuring at least 40 per cent US content.

Integration cuts both ways. Content share is a negotiating asset now, so know yours to the part number.

Plants, Investment & M&A

Spark & Co. puts $4.5M into a new Ontario facility

Spark & Co. is investing $4.5 million in a new Ontario facility. It will include a dedicated production and certification area, allowing the company to prepare its Sintrax laser cutting and deburring equipment to meet applicable Canadian electrical and machine safety standards before delivery to customers.

In-country certification capacity shortens lead times. Ask suppliers where Canadian safety prep actually happens.

Workforce & Skills

Mitacs and NGen partner on advanced manufacturing talent

Mitacs and NGen have signed a partnership to scale advanced manufacturing talent and accelerate Canadian R&D. The partners intend to work together to integrate qualified students and graduates into industry-led advanced manufacturing R&D projects across Canada.

Student-placement programs are the cheapest engineering capacity most SMEs never get around to applying for.

Automation & Technology Adoption

Ontario cabinet gains an associate minister of AI adoption

Premier Doug Ford has unveiled changes to the Ontario cabinet. Among them is the introduction of an associate minister of artificial intelligence adoption, a portfolio named for uptake rather than for research or regulation.

A named adoption portfolio usually precedes adoption funding. Worth a call to your MPP this quarter.

Automation & Technology Adoption

Vention opens a physical AI lab for robotic manipulation

Vention has opened a physical AI lab focused on advancing robotic manipulation from AI research toward reliable, scalable manufacturing deployment.

The hard part was never the grasp, it is repeatability at line rate. Watch what this lab publishes.
