Industrial Policy & Regulation

Three Chinese ministries order carmakers and suppliers to stop overseas price wars

Beijing has told Chinese carmakers and component suppliers to stop offering steep discounts in export markets as they expand globally. SCMP reports it is the first time three ministry-level authorities have jointly pushed the message, framing pricing discipline as a condition of "healthy growth."

The cheapest quote from a Chinese supplier may firm up. Re-price any sourcing model built on the assumption that export discounting continues.

Geopolitics & Trade

US export curbs have pushed China’s IPO pipeline onto its own chokepoints

Chinese technology firms seeking public listings are increasingly clustered in the areas Beijing is trying to de-foreignise, according to a report cited by SCMP. Years of US export controls have reshaped which companies get capital — it now follows the chokepoints rather than the consumer market.

Expect domestic Chinese alternatives to arrive first in exactly the categories the US restricted. Watch your own restricted-component list for substitutes.

Taiwan’s six-year crackdown on undercover Chinese chip labs, quantified

Previously unpublished government data obtained by Rest of World reveals the scale of Taiwan’s investigations into Chinese companies accused of concealing their ties while recruiting chip talent and pursuing sensitive technology on the island.

Supplier ownership is not always what the paperwork says. Beneficial-ownership checks belong in semiconductor and precision-component vendor onboarding.

Supply Chains & Critical Minerals

US drugmakers remain dependent on Chinese inputs for common medicines

Analysts warn that a disruption to Chinese sources of common antibiotics or blood thinners could leave American patients without a reliable alternative, The Diplomat reports. The exposure sits in inputs rather than finished product, which is where it is hardest to see.

The same pattern — a single-country dependency two tiers down — is likely in your own bill of materials. Map tier-2 and tier-3, not just direct suppliers.

Robotics & Embodied AI

China’s humanoid makers try to move past the show floor

TechNode reports from a season of Chinese humanoid demonstrations — robots cooking noodles, climbing stairs, sparring inside a fighting ring — and asks what happens when the exhibition ends. It is the first of a series examining whether the sector does work beyond staged conference tasks.

Treat humanoid capability claims as demo-grade until someone names a plant, a shift and a cycle time. Ask vendors for the deployment, not the video.

AI / LLMs in Industry

Tencent’s Hy4 model climbs open-source rankings on ecosystem-trained data

Tencent used its own product ecosystem to train its Hy4 preview model, which analysts cited by SCMP say returns its flagship suite to the top tier of open-source offerings and gives it an edge in developing AI agents.

Capable open-weight models keep arriving from China at low cost. That widens what you can run on your own hardware without sending plant data out.

Unitree builds a "three bases, two centers" footprint in Chengdu

Unitree is establishing an embodied-intelligence footprint in Chengdu under a "three bases, two centers" plan, Pandaily reports, making it the fifth leading Chinese embodied-AI company to set up in the southwestern tech hub.

China’s robot supply base is clustering, which usually precedes falling unit costs. Revisit robot capex assumptions on a two-to-three-year horizon.
